How to start therapy

To start therapy, you will first have found a mental health therapist that you think you will be able to work well with.  You may have narrowed your search down to 2 or 3 therapists and it is perfectly reasonable to speak with all of them to see which one you feel is the best fit for you.  All good therapists will understand that this is something that many clients wish to do before choosing someone.  After all, all parties want to have a committed and fruitful relationship so it is well worth it in the early stages to try some therapists out.  If you have not made a shortlist yet, there are a number of directories such as UKCP register, BACP register, Counselling Directory and Psychology Today that can help you find suitable therapists for your needs.  All of the therapists on those lists will have credentials and specialisations and you’ll want to make sure these are right for you.

Many therapists (including myself) offer a free 15-minute consultation call or a short session for this purpose. If you feel like your therapist is a good match for you, you’ll then schedule a first full appointment.  I allow a little extra than the usual 50 minutes for a first session as often there is a lot to say.

After any initial form filling that your therapist needs you to do, you you and your therapist will begin to get to know each other. If you know what issues and concerns you would like to discuss, this is a very good place to start. If you are not sure where to start, your therapist may ask you questions about your life, your relationships and other things that affect you such as work or studies.

It is sometimes not easy to start therapy and keep in mind that taking that first step is a great hurdle to have jumped.  Once you have started you will most likely find you are easing into it and hopefully finding it useful.  If you have been keeping things to yourself for a long time, you many find that therapy feels very difficult initially because you are letting go and sharing your thoughts and feelings.  Take your time and allow your therapist to be

alongside you as you settle in.
